Though this is the earliest recording I have of the band, ironically its the only one that contains the lineup that existed when the band later broke up. It's therefore the only 5 piece recording I made. According to my 1st grade math lesson, that means I have 5 elements to record and only 4 tracks to record them on. So what I always do in that situation is to not record one of the guitars (guitars are loud and it will surely be picked up in the other mics anyways). I don't remember exactly if I tried to mic the vocals and 1 guitar at the same time, or if it just sounds that way. Beucase the vocals are a bit muffled but both guitars are definately audible. This session contains the only recordings that exist (studio or otherwise, to my knowledge) of 'American Fun', and 'Listen' which was a song that Tony sung/wrote. Later 'Listen' became a song for Tony's next band, Out of Time. The song was slightly different and the title was changed, I don't remember what it was called...something with the word 'Sister' in the title.
This is also the only 'non-demo' version of 'Spreading Yourself Thin'. It still doesn't have vocals in the 2nd verse but the rest is airtight and the structure is intact. Please disregard Jamey at the end of the song yelling 'I suck!' for some minor fuckup. Even 7 years ago when I recorded this I remember clearly listening to this song all the time. This was before I even figured out how to hook the 4-track up to my computer and create mp3s (and burn CDs) so I used to hook the 4track up in my parents living room and dub the songs down onto regular casettes for the band or myself. I used to just leave the 4-track set up and connected to the stereo whenever I wasn't using it however. I remember coming home late at night trippin one time and I put the headphones on and listened to the song a few times before I went to bed. The first time I ever heard this song was Washburn playing it 'acoustic' on a super duper piece of shit electric guitar with ultra-rusted strings that Jamey had banging around his various residences over the years. He just banged out the verse progression and sang some of it and I was transfixed by the awesome chord voicings. I still am today. The open D and C chords in teh 2nd half of each time the verse runs thru may be a 'cheap' stunt to some, but it still gives me goosebumps today.
This session also contains one of the two times I have recordings of me playing with the band. Jamey fucks up 'Serial Killer' the 1st time around, but he holds it together with me the 2nd time. You can hear Washburn crackin up at me for playing some Slayer style low E shit in the very beginning under Reid busting the opening riff. Also listen for Washburn busting some Adlibs before the break and ending with 'Pie in the Sky Style!
